Sri Lankan university teachers' main Union Federation
of University Teachers' Associations (FUTA) held a discussion with the Higher
Education Ministry Officials yesterday.
FUTA discussed about government's failure to
fulfill the promises it gave when the FUTA decided to end their 3 months-long
strike.
FUTA said that the government had so far
failed to implement the pledge to take action to make the university teachers'
service a special service as agreed at the settlement of the strike of the
university teachers.
Sri
Lankan Higher Education Ministry said that a committee will be appointed next
week to formulate recommendations to make university lecturers, a special
service.
Higher
Education Ministry Secretary, Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratne said that they arrived
at this decision during discussions with FUTA on December 3.
FUTA
Secretary Dr. Terrence Madhujith said that the names of their representatives
for the committee were handed over to the Ministry.
