Year 5(Grade Five) Scholarship Examination 2012 results released.


GCE A/L Exam results will be released before January 2013 Commissioner General for Examinations W.M.N.J. Pushpakumara said.

Solve university Teachers Problem-Students Protest Sri Lanka

Colombo University Students of Sri Lanka launched a Sathyagraha Campaign in front of University Grants Commission (UGC) today. Meanwhile Police Used Water cannons to disperse the students.
Due to this tense situation, Heavy traffic was reported. Seven students have been taken into custody by the Police and later released. Five students were arrested by the Police.

In Sri Lanka there are protests and boycotts by both academics and students calling on the government to work for resolve the issues faced by lecturers. In some cases, police fired teargas and water cannons to disperse protestors. But the demands of academics have not yet been met and their strike is still on.

The union FUTA is demanding that the government allocate 6% of Sri Lanka’s gross domestic product to education, grants universities independence from political interference, and increases lecturer salaries by 20%.

Academics launched their strike on 4 July, paralysing higher education institutions, suspending the academic activities of around 70,000 undergraduate students and affecting examinations.

Sri Lanka Government order all universities to urgently reopen

Higher Education Minister SB Dissanayake took the decision to reopen universities based on powers vested to him under the University Act. The ministry announced that 15 universities and six higher education institutes would resume operating, but did not provide reasons.

All Universities Re-Open Sri Lanka

Majority of Sri Lankan universities re-commenced academic activities on October 15 and several universities will be re commenced this week or early next week Higher Education Ministry sources said. Management and Science faculty of Jaffna University will be re-opened on October 17 and 22.
The Lecturers’ union FUTA said arrangements had been made to re-commence academic activities at all universities soon and also they hope to conduct lectures on Weekends to cover the syllabus quickly.

Sri Lankan government decided to re-open all the state universities tomorrow (September 06). However the Federation of University Teachers’ Association’s (FUTA) problem is not yet resolved and they are continued the strike. Higher Education Minister S B Dissanayake has taken the decision of re-open the universities tomorrow.

 
Sri Lankan Higher Education Ministry closed down all state universities and several higher educational institutes on August 21. The decision to close all the universities was taken after two-month long strike launched by university Academics came to a critical stage.

University teachers started strike on July 04 and due to FUTA strike all the activities of university were paralyzed and about 70,000 undergraduate students suspended the academic activities and affected the examination of universities. Fifteen universities and six higher education institutes were closed indefinitely except Medical Faculties. 
Series of protests and boycotts were seen island wide both university teachers and university students urging Re-open the universities soon.

Earlier JVP and IUSF demanded the government to reopen the universities and should take steps to solve the issues faced by the university lecturers.
“University students have lot of assignments, projects and researches and also lot of self-study, so it is important for universities to be open for students at all times. Then they can use libraries and labs” Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) Convener Sanjeewa Bandara said.

Sri Lanka Supreme Court ordered to admit 5609 students for universities

Sri Lanka Supreme Court ordered UGC to admit 5609 additional Students for local Universities after solving the Z score Crisis. Due to this additional intake, about 27000 students would be admitted to Sri Lankan Universities for the next academic year scheduled to start by October this year which is 25% increase than normal intake.

Sri Lanka Supreme Court ordered to University Grant Commission (UGC) to re calculate District and Island Rank and re issue the ranks again.
Also Supreme Court directed UGC to admit additional Students for local Universities. Consequently 4928 students will be admitting for the next academic year.
The final report on the controversial Z-scores handed over to the Supreme Court today by UGC. President's Counsel Faiz Mustapha is appearing for the UGC.
The court gave the order after hearing the petition filed by students those who failed to enter universities due to wrong calculation of results of university entrance examination(GCE A/L) held 2011.

Due to this additional intake, 27000 students would be admitted to Sri Lankan Universities for the next academic year scheduled to start by October this year. About 22000 students enrolled to universities last year. Only 21,111 students were selected to Universities in 2010 while it was 20,270 students in year 2009.
All Universities scheduled to admit students for 2011/2012 academic year on October this year but seems it will be delayed due to Z score crisis. Before entering in to the universities every student should follow a three months compulsory full time Special English and IT course. The above course will not commence this year but the Leadership Training Program will be held. Meanwhile Higher Education Minister S B Dissanayake said that throughout the last year 80% of ragging was curbed due to the strict measures taken and it will be eradicate very soon.
