Jaffna University Teachers to boycott classes:Sri Lanka


Jaffna University Lecturers Teachers boycott classes
Jaffna University Lecturers will boycott classes as a mark of protest demanding the release of four university students who are still in Sri Lankan police custody.
Jaffna university teachers' association says, a dreadful and uncertain environment is building up in the area, after having detained, the arrested four university students in Welikanda army camp.
The Jaffna University Teachers' Union said that although 7 out of the 11 students who were arrested by the Terrorism Investigations Department (TID) have been released the teachers would continue with their protest campaign until all students are released.
The Union said the teachers would return to work only after all students have been released.
Four student leaders—V. Bavanandan, P. Darshanan, Kanakasundaram Jenamejeyan, and Shanmugam Solomon—have been sent to Welikanda detention camp,
Mr Parameshwaram Thamotharan,the chairman for university teachers association said, the students are leaving the university and in some cases the country in fear of persecution.
The chairman of the teachers' association said to Media, not only students, but even parents have expressed their concern about uncertain future of the university. We already have requested several times from President Mahinda Rajapaksa and from other responsible authorities to take necessary measures to stop this situation. He further said that the authorities have turned a blind eye to the requests, we have made and instead, security forces still hunting for students.
University activities came to a standstill after police arrested 11 Jaffna University students and handed them to the TID following a clash on November 27th where the students tried to commemorate the Heroes Day-Martyr Day.

Jaffna University Student Dead

First Year female student of the Jaffna University, arts faculty has been found dead under suspicious circumstances at her residence in Chunnakam, Jaffna,Sri Lanka.
This mysterious death once again cause tense situation at the Jaffna University.

Victim identified as Nadarasa Kiyani resident of Chunnagam area and the student of Jaffna University, sources said.
The 21-year-old, student was found dead in a chair in the house where she had engaged in studies.

Police said a piece of cloth from a bed sheet was found wrapped around her neck and therefore suspect she was strangled and murdered last evening.
The suspicious death had occurred while her parents were away from the house, police said.

The results of 2012 GCE Advanced Level (A/L) examination have been released short while ago to the internet.

The results of the 2012 G.C.E. Advanced Level examination will be released before January 30, 2013, confirmed the Commissioner General of Examinations N.J. Pushpakumara. 

The 2012 A/L examinations commenced on August 06 while paper marking had been delayed due to a strike launched by university lecturers. 

A total of 277,671 candidates sat for the examination at 2,093 centres.

Rajarata University Students Arrested-Sri Lanka

Rajarata University Students arrested attacked sri lanka
Three students of Rajarata University,Sri Lanka have been arrested by the police under false charges Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) said.
On December 4, five Rajarata campus students were attacked by an unknown group and admitted to the Mihintale Hospital. 
Two of these students were attacked within their private hostels and other two were attacked while going to their hostel.
12 men wearing masks and armed with knives, swords and daggers had attacked them.

Jaffna University Students released-Sri Lanka

Seven students of Jaffna University have been released yesterday  (December 09). 
Sri Lankan police arrested ten students last week following clashes that erupted during a protest on November 28 after students commemorated LTTE Heroes' Day (Martyr’s Day). 

5 Students from Medical faculty, 2 students from Science faculty has been released this regard. Earlier 1 student was released after being produced before Courts.


Vice Chancellor hold special discussion with TID officials on releasing students of arts and Management faculties.
Dean of the Medical Faculty Professor .S.Balakumar and the Dean of the Management Faculty professor T.Velnambi met TID officials at Vavuniya last evening. During the time of meeting TID officials promised to release all these students.  


Since November 29, all the academic activities was at standstill  and would commence once the students returned.

Degree for Sri Lankan Nurses- Post Basic Nursing School

Sri Lanka Nurses will be able to obtain university degrees through the Post Basic Nursing School in Colombo soon.

Sri Lanka Health Ministry says the government has decided to uplift a major nursing school, the Post Basic School of Nursing (PBSN) as a degree awarding university for nursing. The Colombo Post Basic School of Nursing will be upgraded as a university campus affiliated to the Colombo University.

Nurses who enter this new faculty can follow degrees equivalent to state university degrees. The Post Basic Nursing School will follow the same university entrance procedure as that of other universities when offering admission to nurses.

A special committee has been set up with the representation of the University Grant Commission (UGC), the Higher Education Ministry and Health Ministry to formulate the syllabus, look into outstanding matters and with regard to other procedures. The degree course will be four years in duration.

Post Basic School of Nursing which was started in 1960 is the only institution for higher nursing education in Sri Lanka. It provides the Diploma in Teaching and Supervision for Nursing Tutors and Diploma in Ward Management and Supervision for Ward Sisters.
In addition, it conducts other short-term courses for registered nurses including courses on orthopedic nursing, intensive care nursing, operation theatre and, pediatric nursing.
