Mahapola Scholarships and Bursary Details for Sri Lankan University Students


Obtaining Financial Assistance/Scholarships for Undergraduate Studies 
Three types of Financial Assistance are available for Undergraduates.

1.Mahapola Scholarship
2.Bursary
3. Endowed scholarships

1.Mahapola Scholarship

Mahapola Scholarships are awarded by the Mahapola Trust Fund and the number of scholarships to be awarded in a particular year is determined by the Fund.
Step 1:
All successful candidates will be sent an application form for a Mahapola Scholarship by the UGC.
Step 2:
Duly filled application forms along with required documents be submitted to the UGC through the Grama Niladari and the Divisional Secretary of the respective area of residence on or before the closing date specified in the Application form.
Step 3:
All the applications are entered to a computerized system and a reference number unique to each applicant is generated for each application.
Step 4:
Incomplete applications will be rejected and notified to the applicant in writing.
Step 5:
Acknowledgement card informing the receipt of the Mahapola Scholarship application form with a reference number is sent to each candidate.
Step 6:
Selections are done by the UGC according to four subject streams (ie. Arts, Commerce, Bio Science and Physical Science) on the basis of,
1. Merit (the top 10% of each subject stream will be selected under this method.)
2. Need (based on the annual income, Z score and the District from where the candidate has been selected for admissions.)

Step 7:
The list of selected candidates will be sent by the UGC to the Mahapola Trust Fund and Candidates selected for Mahapola Scholarships will be informed by the Trust Fund.

2. Bursary

Step 1
University at which the Student is registered will call for applications for University Bursaries.
Step 2
Needy students should make an application to the Student Welfare Branch of the University.
Step 3:
The University will select students for Bursaries according to criteria approved by the UGC.
Note: All information regarding University Bursaries can be obtained from the University to which the student is attached to.



The Sri Lankan President has appointed a committee to look into whether Mahapola Scholarship funds given to university students could be increased, Higher education Minister SB Dissanayake said.

He was responding to a question by DNA MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake. DNA MP also stated that Mahapola Scholarship has not been increased for a long period.

The “Mahapola” concept introduced by the late Hon.Lalith Athulathmudali (P.C.) in 1980, was initially only a Trade Fair, organized by the Ministry of Trade & Shipping for the primary purpose of channeling the benefits of the open economy to the rural community. The Trade Fair and the educational exhibition were organized in schools and the income generated from the sale of the entrance tickets were utilized to provide basic facilities to these schools.
The Mahapola Trust Fund, which began in 1981 with awarding 422 scholarships has awarded over 173,500 scholarships to the underprivileged students of this country during last 28 years of period and the expenditure involved in this exercise is over Rs.835 million for this year.
Board of Trustees of the Fund approved the awarding of Mahapola Scholarships for 10,000 students of the Academic year 2008/2009 recommended by the University Grants Commission on the results of the G.C.E.(A/L) 2008. Out of that 1000 scholarships were awarded on the Merit basis and the rest of 9000 scholarships were awarded to the students from families of lower income level and on Merit basis. 500 Scholarships were increased when compared to 9500 Scholarships awarded in last year and 51.71% of the total of 19,340 students who intake to the universities were covered by the Mahapola Scholarships. Accordingly, students selected to 88 courses by the University Grants Commission were awarded Mahapola Scholarships in the year 2009.
In addition to the Scholarships recommended by the University Grants commission 1650 Scholarships were awarded to the students who were following Degree or Diploma Courses in Other Educational Institutes.

The following institutes’ students were awarded.  

Sri Lanka Law College
Institute of Aesthetic Studies
National Technology Institute of University of Moratuwa
Buddhist & Pali University
Buddha Shrawaka Bhikku University
National Social Development Institute (Degree 10, Diploma 15)
Advanced Technical Education Institute (15 Divisional Inst.)
400 Scholarships were allocated to the Open University of Sri Lanka

  2. No.If any bursary recipient is selected for Mahapola Scholarship his/her bursary payment is discontinued and Mahapola payment will be started.
