Stern action will be taken against those who are involving in ragging incidents. Higher Education Ministry Secretary said that Ministry has received information about several ragging incidents and stern action will be taken those who involved.
It is reported that new batch of Rajarata University Medical faculty have to face ragging from seniors. “If those who are behind this will be expelled from university” he said.
However the Sri Lankan Higher Education Minister has guaranteed to wipe out ragging from universities this year but still it is prevailing secretly within the university system.
Earlier,Sri Lankan Higher Education Minister S.B.Dissanayake said that authorities would not hesitate to take tough action against raggers including possible expulsion of students found guilty of ragging in order to protect new entrants. It has been identified that only 4 universities are continuing ragging. Hence special attention has put on these universities At present the ragging has been reduced in most universities but the Ministry has received information that in certain universities the ragging is still being carried out secretly.
Ragging is a verbal, physical or psychological abuse on newcomers to university or any educational institutions. According to the wikipedia ,Sri Lanka is said to be its worst affected country in the world.

  1. Severe ragging is going on in some universities while few universities have not started their sessions for freshers yet. Although the Higher Education Minister harps on eliminating ragging and having Leadership camps to totally eliminate ragging we can not see an improvement in the incidents of ragging. Ragging should be totally banned in state universities as in foreign universities. At Peradeniya several female students have been hospitalised after forcing them to eat stale food by the seniors. Some male students were also hospitalised with pneumonia after they were kept in a cool water pool overnight bear bodied. Although there is a police post inside the Peradeniya university no action is taken by either the Police or the university administration authorities.

  2. Although the Higher Education Ministry secretary says that stern action will be taken against those who are involved in ragging incidents no action whatsoever has been taken upto the present moment. Some universities has not yet started academic sessions for freshers yet due to university games.
