Sri Lanka university teachers given opportunity to work until 70 years of age

Sri Lanka government has decided to allow the university lecturers to work five more years under contract after their retirement.
Present retirement age for the university teachers of Sri Lanka is 65 years. Under the new scheme, they can work until 70 years of age.
The lecturer's career record of past three years will be considered in deciding whether their service is necessary for the university.
However, the lecturers who will work under contract will not be granted permission to hold administrative positions. They are given the opportunity to engage in teaching and research.
Secretary of the Higher Education Ministry Sunil Jayantha Navaratne said the regulations are being compiled with the support of the University Grants Commission UGC to grant this opportunity to the academics.
