University Cut-Off Marks Delay

A/L 2011 University Entrance Cut-Off Marks Delay UGC.AC.LK
There is a delay in the releasing the 2011 GCE Advanced Level Examination University Entrance Z score cut off marks due to legal procedures.
The cut off marks would be released after those issues were solved. The case would be hear on February 6.Parents and students complained that the cut-off marks had still not been released and they had not yet been informed of another date.University Leadership Training program third batch selected students details are no yet released to the web but the Higher Education Ministry has scheduled to commence it on February 12.

Meanwhile Colombo University Vice Chancellor, Professor Kshanika Hirimburegama, assumed duties as the new Chairman for the University Grants Commission (UGC) from February 1st and LankaUniversity-News hopes she will be involved in this issue immediately and take necessary steps to release the Cut off Marks soon.
Meanwhile University Grants Commission (UGC) has filed papers in the Supreme Court seeking a slight adjustment to the selection of students for practical/aptitude tests, to determine their eligibility to be admitted to the University for the Academic year 2011/2012.
The Supreme Court ordered the UGC to admit 5,609 students in addition to the normal intake. However UGC realized that in some districts, only a few students had obtained the pass marks to be called for the practical, aptitude tests.
The UGC sought the permission of the Court to take students from other districts to make up for the shortage to meet the legal requirement of 5,609 admissions for the academic year, 2011/2012.

Japura University Students Suspended

Eight students have been expelled from the Sri Jayawardenapura University.
Media Spokesperson for the University, Professor Praneeth Abeysundara said that six more students have been suspended.
Prof. Abeysundara added that the administrative council of the university had conducted a disciplinary inquiry into these students based on several complaints.
He noted that the students were penalized for assaulting security officials as well as a professor and fo damaging university property, among other charges.

Meanwhile Convener of the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) Sanjeewa Bandara said that Sri Lankan government is suppressing students who are against the Bill pertaining to Private Universities,
Sanjeewa further said “For the past three years, students at the Sri Jayewardenepura University have been suppressed, and the administration is working towards suppressing them further. They have suspended four students for three years. Another three students have been given lifetime suspension”.
“The university administration is making baseless allegations against students an order to suspend them from the university. Since Sri Lanka is a democratic country, the government has no right to work towards oppression,” Bandara added. He alleged that three girls have been suspended from the University because they had taken a friend to buy some medicine. “This is not an issue about one’s character but an issue about being humane,” he said, adding, “the steps taken by the Chancellor in this regard are disgraceful and are a blot on the university’s administration. He accused the government of being behind these actions to suppress the students, and charged that the Chancellor had been given a free hand to do as he pleases.
“We condemn all these actions, and we would like to state that suspending students will not decelerate the progress of student movements,” Bandara declared.

Law Entrance Exam Cut Off Mark Reduced

The Council of Legal Education in Sri Lanka has decided to reduce the minimum marks required for admission to the Law College to 66.
The Principal of the Sri Lankan Law College Mr. W.D.Rodrigo said that accordingly 551 students will be admitted to the Law College in the year 2013.
This decision has been taken following the problems that had emerged relating to the examination held last year.

Consequent to protest of the students who sat for the examination in 2012 saying that certain irregularities had taken place in the results, the intake of students was postponed.
The Criminal Investigation Department also made a special investigation in this connection and the relevant CID report has been handed over to the Council of Legal Education. The report states that irregularities had taken place in the examination.
Moreover, the Principal of the Law College said that it has been decided to change the curriculum of the Law College from 2013.

Moratuwa University NDT to Homagama

The Moratuwa University said it would relocate the National Diploma in Technology (NDT) programme to a new location in Homagama.
This step is being taken to prevent further friction between student groups in the university following a recent attack which left some students critically injured and university facilities severely damaged.
Some 700 NDT students are alleged to have attacked students of the Moratuwa University Engineering Faculty on January 16 leading to the Engineering Faculty coming to a standstill.
University Vice Chancellor A.K.W. Jayawardane said the Engineering Faculty would remain closed until further notice and that a project to construct a new university building for the NDT programme would begin soon.
“This is a project that has been in the pipeline for a long time. It is not something that we thought of overnight as a result of the recent clash,” Professor Jayawardene said.
He said the construction project was being carried out at a cost of US$89 million but it was still uncertain when the construction work would be completed.
Prof. Jayawardene said he met the police and the students yesterday to discuss what remedial measures needed to be taken to prevent a repetition of the clash which had cost a huge Rs.1 million in damages to the university premises.
“It is university policy to charge students three times the cost of any damage caused to the university premises. The same policy will be applied here as well. We are in the process of identifying the students who gave leadership to this attack. A police investigation and an internal university investigation are being carried out to identify those responsible for the attack,” he said.
Prof. Jayawardene said an engineering student who suffered severe brain injuries during the clash would be released from hospital today. online-dailymirror

Achala was admitted to the Matara Hospital on 17th January 2013 for a fracture. Due to the negligence of the medical staff of the Matara hospital when bandaging her arm for the FRACTURE. Due to the tight binding of the bandage, the blood circulation to her arm ceased, which fatally damaged the nerves in her left arm. Consequently she was transferred to the General Hospital, Colombo where her left arm was amputated.
This is one example of medical negligence that occurs frequently in state-paid hospitals.

Achala is the only member of her family to enter university. Her mother is a housemaid in Lebanon while her father and brother have no proper employemt. She was the only hope of her family in order for them to overcome their many economic hardships.
