Foreign University students to be awarded scholarships

Foreign students to be awarded scholarships.
The Higher Education Ministry stated that hundred scholarships will be awarded to foreign students for them to pursue their higher education in Sri Lanka and serve as ambassadors to Sri Lanka.

Ministry Secretary Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navarathne said that 100 scholarships will be awarded to students in 58 countries, enabling them to do their undergraduate studies, masters and PhDs in Sri Lanka.

This is in line with the Higher Education Ministry’s long term vision to be the hub of academic excellence by the year 2020, he said.

Beneficiary countries include Afghanistan, Brazil, Canada, France, Ethiopia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey and the USA, to name a few. The ministry claims that Sri Lanka would be the best country in the world to learn about irrigation, Buddhism, Ayurveda, History and to conduct research related to war and peace.

“The foreign students will become our ambassadors and will help promote Sri Lanka as an education hub. They can learn about Sri Lanka’s history, culture and peace and conflict studies. What better place than Sri Lanka to learn all these?” Dr. Navarathne queried.

However, educationalists charged that the ministry has lost focus on its priorities and are looking at the education sector as a profit making institute.

The Federation of University Teachers’ Association (FUTA) questioned Higher Education Ministry’s priorities, stating that the ministry ought to focus on allocating more space to local students as there is tight competition.

“Students are living in hostels unsuitable for human habitation,” FUTA President Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri told . “They don’t care about what we are saying and are instead making higher education into a profit0-making venture,” he added.
