Medical specialists who have attended the consultative committee meeting of the Education Ministry have said that the Grade 5 scholarship examination placed an undue burden on children at a tender age.
Medical experts have said that if the government wished to continue with the Grade 5 scholarship examination, they could shift it to Grade 7.
Although Sri Lankan children were intelligent to face the challenge of a competitive exam in Grade 5, it was an undue pressure on them.

Ceylon Teachers Union CTU in Sri Lanka asks government to increase university admissions

Education sector trade union in Sri Lanka asks government to increase university admissions
A trade union affiliated to Sri Lanka's education sector has called on the government to increase the intake of students into state universities.
The Ceylon Teacher's Union (CTU) has urged the government to admit as many students as possible to the universities from students who have passed the GCE Advanced Level examination in 2012.
CTU General Secretary, Joseph Stalin has pointed out that students who sat for the GCE A/Level examination in 2012 should have been admitted to universities in June 2013, which has not yet happened.
He has charged that the Higher Education Ministry was trying to promote private universities in the country without admitting students to local universities.

According to Stalin, higher education authorities need to address the issues faced by students and the cut off mark for university admission should be released.

Sri Lanka University students union protest against setting up private British university

Sri Lankan students' union protest against setting up private British university-UClan Sri Lanka

A students' union has handed a petition to the British High Commission in Colombo against setting up of a private university affiliated to the Lancashire University in UK in Sri Lanka.
The Socialist Students' Union (SSU) organized a protest against private universities and the threat to free education in the country outside the British High Commission in Colombo.
National Organizer of the SSU, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa handed over the petition to the British High Commission opposing an alleged move to lay the foundation stone to a private university by Prince Charles during his visit to Sri Lanka for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) next month.
However, the British High Commission yesterday rejected the report that the Prince of Wales will inaugurate the new University of Central Lancashire campus during his upcoming visit to Colombo saying that it has never been a part of the Prince's programme.
The proposed private university affiliated to Lancashire University is planned to be set up within the Mirigama Export Processing zone.

According to Dr. Jayatissa, the students union would continue to protest against moves to set up private universities and ensure that the country's free education system is safeguarded.
