External Degree Examination Sri Lanka-special Board to conduct
A special Board to conduct External Degree Examination.
Minister of Higher Education S B Dissanayake said that steps have been taken to improve the quality of External Degree of the Universities.
He said that the quality of this degree needs to be improved to become it acceptable on an international level.  The Minister said that information has been received that in the recent past students who have not even passed 5 subjects in the GCE Ordinary Level Examination properly have obtained external degrees and it misleads the students.  The Minister said that a special Board will be appointed to hold the external degree examination by the Examination Department and the University Grants Commission.  It will become necessary for the External Degree students to pass an examination that will be held by this Board.
Registrations can now be made to obtain external degrees from the Open Universities.  In addition to this possibilities have been made to undertake a degree course by studying the technical courses conducted by Skills Development Ministry and the Higher Technical Institutions of that Ministry.  Meanwhile, new study courses have been introduced to the Universities and English and Information Technology have been given priority in these new courses.
