University Teachers Salary Increased by 30% - Sri Lanka FUTA NEWS
The Sri Lankan government has decided to increase the salaries of the university lecturers by 30 percent. 
Accordingly the research and study allowances will increase from 25 percent to 30 percent of the basic salary from the 1st of January Next year(2013). Also the study allowance will be considered as an earning, the Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa said in a statement.

A special discussion was held between university lecturers and Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa at the Ministry of Economic Development on Friday.
Minister Rajapaksa has also informed the Ministry of Higher Education about the decision.
Sri Lanka’s longest lecturer strike, which lasted for nearly 100 days, was called off by the university teachers’ union October after crucial discussions led to a government climb-down and capitulation to several union demands. 
Under the 2013 budget proposals the study allowance of a newly recruited lecturer will be increased by 60 percent and a lecturer by 75 percent , a senior lecturer of grade 1 and grade 2 by 80 percent. The study allowance of Assistant professors and senior professors will be increased by 85 percent.
Half of the increase will be granted from January while the other half will be paid from June.The research allowance will be increased from 25 percent of the basic salary to 35 percent.
The government has taken measures to remove certain circulars and amendments of others that are deemed to be obstructing the rights of university teachers and independence of universities, the Economic Development Ministry said in a statement.
The government has also agreed to accept the proposals of the university staff with regard to MOUs on external study courses. During the discussion the Minister has noted that the government needs the support of all sectors as plans are underway to make larger investments on education, higher education and vocational sectors.
The President of the Federation of University Teachers' Association (FUTA) Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri has appreciated the government's measures in resolving their issues and explained that declaring the research and study allowances as earnings, additions can be made to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) accordingly to increase the contribution of the government.
