Medical students should be useful citizens

At a parents – teachers get together held to mark the entrance of 240 medical students to the Medical Faculty, Peradeniya University, recently, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor M.D. Lamawansa said the aspiration of a medical student should not only be to become a doctor, but also to be a useful citizen of the country.

"There was an increase in the intake of University students this year, and a delay in admitting them. A period of five years has to be spent in the university, to be a qualified doctor. We have made available all the facilities for the studies. It is my request such facilities be used to carry out their studies. In order to follow this degree programme, a knowledge of English is very essential and those students who do not possess a knowledge of English should follow the crash programme, which is considered to be helpful for their studies," Professor Lamawansa said.

The ceremony was attended by the Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor, Athula Senarathna, Deputy VC, Professor, S.K. Hennayaka, Colombo University Medical Faculty Dean Professor R. Jayasekera and a large number of parents and undergraduates.Extract From Online CeylonToday
