University Town Project in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan Higher Education Ministry has launched special project to establish university towns in Sri Lanka. The new project has named “university township project” Sri Lankan Higher Education Ministry Secretary Dr. Sunil Jayantha told the SLUN.

What is a University Town
In a University town there are special features, they are professional institutes, hostel facilities, students union, Child care centre, hospitals, Banks, Shopping complexes, Gym, sports complex, Laboratory, Library and Improved road network.
Shopping malls will be set up to provide commercial and financial services to both university town population and local community. Both People and students can use these facilities.
A college town or university town is a community which is dominated by its university population

Under this project Shopping Malls, hospitals, banks, post office, libraries, labs and research centers will be set up in the selected university. These facilities can be used for both town community and the students.
The economy of the city is closely related with the university activity and university can earn from this project he said.

The objective of township project is to expand the infrastructure facilities of the universities and integrate the town community and the university students. When developing each university town, the historical significance related with each university will be considered he further said.

The project has already stared and University Grant Commission has sent a letters to all Vice Chancellors informing them to send proposals. Sri Jayewardenepura, Colombo, Kelaniya and Rajarata universities have sent proposals expressing their willing. In the previous Budget government has allocated Rs.1 billion to universities and these money uses for the project.
“Our intention is to systematically turn Sri Lanka into a key educational hub in the Asian region. The university towns can be seen in Oxford, Cambridge and Manipal universities” he said.
We are sure this New project will carry the Sri Lankan Higher Education Sector in a new direction,” jayantha said.
