Universities and other education institutes will remain closed until further notice.

Earlier government announced that all universities will reopen for staff on May 4, for final year students on May 11 & for all other students on May 18 – UGC. Ministry of Higher Education has been informed to review the present situation and with the agreement of the University administrations and University Grant Commission UGC decide the date to open the universities for students. 

The deadline to accept application for university admission extended two weeks after re-opening schools. Schools are planning to re-open on May 11. Hence the new deadline will be on May 25.
Universities will be reopened after evaluating the current situation says President’s Media Division. Higher Education Ministry has advised universities officials to discuss with UGC and take a decision over re-opening dates.


The deadline to accept applications for University Admission for the Academic Year 2019/2020 will be extended until two weeks after the re-opening of schools for the 2nd term. New deadline will be May 25.
Earlier Sri Lanka University Grants Commission UGC has decided to extend university online registration and submitting campus handbook application till April 9. But due to ongoing curfew, students are unable to post their applications. “We are monitoring the situation, if curfew continuous, we will extend the deadline again” UGC Chairman told. Hence he requested students not to panic.
University Admission Handbook for the new 2019/2020 Academic year already released and deadline was earlier on March 26. Later it was extended to April 9th. The new deadline is two weeks after re-opening schools. As the coronavirus is spreading Sri Lanka, UGC and Higher Education Ministry has decided to extend the deadline time to time.


UGC further say Students can only apply through the Internet this time (Apply via Online).  UGC handbook will be cost about Rs. 500 & available UGC Approved bookshops islandwide. Carefully read the hand book and apply before April 9.


Students can apply for universities via Online and can use “Nenasala IT Centeres” for online registration free of charge.

Sri Lanka University Grants Commission UGC sources say cut-off marks for entrance to university for the new academic year will release 2020 June- July. UGC has not yet announced the exact date.

Meanwhile Government planning to prepare a mechanism to admit students to universities within 6 months period after A/L exam results release, said Minister Bandula Gunawardene. Currently it takes about one year to admit students to local universities.


Academic activities of Medical & Engineering faculties will start before 2020 November end. According to the reliable sources other faculties (Management, Science, Arts) will start from 2020 December to February 2021 period.

  1. A/L Results release
  2. University Hand Book release
  3. Buy University handbook & read it carefully
  4. Online Registration & Send print out via post to UGC
  5. Based on students’ desired course students have to apply for Aptitude tests after publishing on national newspapers. 
  6. Sit for Aptitude Tests depend on their selected courses. Then aptitude test results will released by relevant universities.
  7. Re-scrutinized / Re- correction A/Level results release. 
  8. Z score cut off marks will be release (June-July)
  9. University Registration via online
  10. Students will receive selected Course & University

University Admission

Higher education Ministry sources says that the students who qualified for the 2019/2020 University Academic year based on 2019 A/L results will be admitted before the end of 2020.
About 30,000 students will be enrolled for this academic year. Several new subject streams to be introduce this year.

Schools to reopen on May 11?

Government decided to reopen the al schools for the second term on May 11th.Earlier, the second term was scheduled to begin on April 20.

Sri Lanka education ministry has decided to consult health officials before re-opening schools as the country continues to tighten measures seeking to combat the coronavirus.The Government has made arrangements to provide the maximum possible facilities for students to distantly continue their education during the period schools are closed.

May 25, the deadline to accept application for university admission

The deadline to accept application for university admission extended two weeks after re-opening schools. Schools are planning to re-open on May 11. Hence the new deadline will be on May 25.

A/L exam is NOT postponed.

Sri Lanka Education Ministry says that NO decision has been taken to postpone the GCE Advanced Level Examination (GCE A/L Exam 2020). Exam will be held in August as usual. Ministry rejecting the false claims made on social media. Relevant dates and timetable will release to official website of examination department.

O/L Exam results will be released before April 30

Ordinary Level examination results (2019 O/L Exam) will be released before April 30th. Results not released on the scheduled date due to coronavirus outbreak. “O/L Exam Paper marking has done and now left only computer feeding, due to curfew computer feeding will be delay” officials told.

The exact release date and time of the exam results will be announced once the curfew is lifted and normalcy has been restored. Earlier, the results of the O/L Exam set to be released at the end of March 2020, said Commissioner General of Examinations.

Grade Five Scholarship Exam is NOT Postponed

Grade five scholarship exam will NOT be postponed says Education Ministry. Social Media and several newspapers reported that grade 5 scholarship examination will be postponed due to Coronavirus outbreak. Answering the social media posts, Ministry says exam will NOT be delay.

Exam will be held on August 9 or another date according to the previous records after analyzing by “Lanka Education”.
