60 Hostels for Sri Lankan University Students

Sri Lankan Government has decided to construct 60 Hostels for university students. The proposal to construct 60 hostels for university students in the country has been approved by the Cabinet and is expected to be completed within the next 2 years.

There are 17 Universities, including 2 Buddhist Universities, currently functioning in the country with a student population of around 92,000.

The decision was taken at the Cabinet meeting held today (18), considering the need to provide hostel facilities to a large number of students of these Universities, a statement said.

Each of these buildings will consist of 4 stories, with 100 rooms and will provide hostel facilities to 200 students. Over 12,000 students are expected to be benefited upon completion of this project, it said.

The proposal was made by S.B. Dissanayake, Minister of Higher Education, while each hostel is estimated to cost Rs 220 million.

President Unveiled Sri Soratha Statue of Japura Campus

The unveiling of the statue of Ven. Welivitiye Sri Soratha Thera, founder of Vidyodhaya University, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, took place at the university premises today , under the patronage of  Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa & Higher Education Minister S B Dissanayake.
The event coincide with the 50th memorial of the monk who was also the first Vice Chancellor of the University.
The University was ceremonially opened on February 16, 1959 with Governor General Sir Oliver Goonatilleke, as the Chief guest. The university was set up following a government decision to bestow university status to the Vidyodhaya and Vidyalankara Pirivenas. Accordingly, the two universities were established at Maligakanda and Kelaniya respectively.

Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) Convener Released on Bail

Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) convener Sanjeewa Bandara has been released on bail by Colombo Fort Magistrate Court. 
Also he was prohibited from entering the premises of any University in the country by the Court. 
Bandara who was arrested for disregarding police orders and organizing a demonstration, was further remanded until July 15 on July 12 by the Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court.
When the case was taken up today, Mirihana Police informed court that Sanjeewa Bandara is not a university student and that this has been confirmed by the Vice Chancellors of the Ruhunu and Sri Jayawardenapura universities.
Therefore he has no right to illegally organize a protest march with the participation of students from those respective universities, police said. 
Bandara was arrested on July 08 for organizing a protest on June 26 while ignoring orders issued by the police.

Pakistan's Expertise sought to establish research facility in Sri Lanka Defence University

Sri Lanka's Defence Ministry has sought assistance from Pakistan's University of Karachi to establish a world class research facility in the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU).
The Defence Ministry of Sri Lanka has requested the University of Karachi to help the Ministry establish a multidisciplinary research facility similar to the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) at the University of Karachi, in KDU, a university press release said.
Director of ICCBS, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhry has said that the KDU has decided to set up the research facility at a cost of $10 million.
The multidisciplinary research facility will be set up in compliant with international standards under the guidance of Patron-in-Chief of ICCBS, Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman. The ICCBS Administration would transfer technology and expertise between the two countries, the Director said.
A delegation of the University of Karachi comprising Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaiser and the ICCBS Director Dr. Choudhry has recently visited Sri Lanka and met with the higher officials of the Defence Ministry and the KDU.
The Vice-Chancellor of KDU, Major-General Milinda Peiris, has welcomed the Pakistani scientists, and discussed the issues related to setting up of the world class research facility in the KDU, Sri Lanka's only national military medical institution of higher education.
The KDU, established as an academy in 1981 and elevated to university status in 1986, has the full membership of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (United Kingdom). It is the only university in the South Asian region offering graduate courses in defence studies.
Initially, the KDU was meant for military students but, now it has opened its doors to civilian students also and the new programs at the KDU are now open to the general public and the private sector with for a reasonable fee.www.lankauniversity-news.com
