Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa's youngest son Rohitha Rajapaksa is the master minder of this project.Rohitha Rajapaksa has obtained his aerospace engineering master degree in UK.

The satellite will be deployed at 87.5E in the Geo-stationary orbit approximately 36000 km above the surface of the earth and has a design life of 15 years. The SupremeSAT – I was built by Thales Alenia Space of France. Design is based on SB 4000 series satellite bus which comes under the medium class telecommunications satellite category with its launch mass of 5100kg. SB 4000 series has a successful flight heritage, hence it's a very stable and reliable space platform. Having a payload of 56 transponders on board SupremeSAT will be capable of providing communications services, including broadband Internet, telecom and broadcasting and will cover parts of the Middle East, South & Central Asia and also Australia.
R. M. Manivannan, Chairman of SupremeSAT said the launch will take place around 9:30 p.m. Sri Lankan time and the satellite will be positioned above the country in the Geo-Stationary orbit at 87.5 degrees East in just seven minutes.
The
satellite will be operational for commercial purposes in the region by early
June 2013.
A milestone in Sri Lankan history, entering in to
space era for the first time, the Sri Lankan national flag would be displayed
in orbit with the launch of the first satellite Supreme SAT-I.
Sri
Lanka will be the 45th country in the world to own a communication satellite
and the third in South Asia. India and Pakistan have their own satellites.
