Sri Lanka School Teachers Strike Today

Academic activities in most of the Sri Lankan schools have come to a standstill today and interrupted due to the trade union action launched by teachers and principals.

Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers' Union, Joseph Stalin said that the trade union action is being carried out as solutions have not been provided to the salary anomalies and other demands.He said that if the authorities fail to resolve the issue, they continue the strike action.

According to the reports, teachers were absent in schools, a large number of students had turned up in school.

Due to the trade union action, academic activities were disrupted in the Kalutara,Anuradhapura and Kurunegala educational zone.

Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Gotabaya Jayaratne, stated that the trade union action was being carried out while an agreement had been arrived at to grant the demands of the teachers.

Sri Lankan school principals and teachers are decided to go on token strike from December 4^th. About 225,000 teachers and principals of 9662 schools islandwide will join the trade union action. The decision to launch the strike was made at a convention held by teachers and principals at the Mahaweli Center today with the participation of some 14 education sector trade unions.

The Ceylon Teachers' Union (CTU),Sri Lanka’a major education trade union hope that the School children too expected to support the their trade union action. A crucial meeting will be held on November 16 between Education Minister and Teachers Union.

Sri Lanka’s major school Teachers’ trade union is to launch a islandwide strike demanding to remove of their salary anomalies and to win 13 other demands. The Ceylon Teachers' Union (CTU) says the all schools principals and teachers have decided to launch the strike if government fail to fulfill their demands.
