Sri Jayewardenepura University administration has decided to shorten the earlier 15-year ban
imposed on student leaders, to two years.
The decision was
taken after considering a report filed by a disciplinary committee, which
conducted a special inquiry.
Students have been
informed the inquiry for the 30 Management and Arts students, who were also
banned from attending lectures, will be conducted next week.
The university
authorities banned the main student union and some other individual faculty unions,
and also cancelled the student membership of 11 more undergraduates. A group of
over 1,500 undergraduates of the university staged a peaceful protest march
from the university premises to Nugegoda town on Wednesday (26), demanding that
issues related to student welfare and the curbing of student rights and the
suspension of students be removed.
