Students leave SLIATE due to ragging

Students leave SLIATE due to ragging-Female students forced to wear skirts, not allowed to use toilets.

3 students who were enrolled in the Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education (SLIATE) in Dehiwala recently dropped out of the course they were following due to intense ragging carried out by the senior students.
According to a first-year student representative, who wished to remain anonymous, students who were following the Higher National Diploma (HND) in English were subjected to intense verbal and physical harassment by the senior students, who were in their second and third years.
The student representative stated that female students were banned from using the canteen or the toilets, and also forced to wear skirts all the time. The male students were forced to strip down in the presence of the seniors as part of the ragging, he said.
"It's students from the English Literary Society who are doing this. We think that the teacher in charge also knows about this, but she's supportive of their activities," he said, adding that the first-year students have already informed the Higher Education Ministry of their plight in writing.
However, when attempted to contact SLIATE to clarify this issue, none of the officials or directors was available for comment.
