
A proposal to convert the
South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) in Malabe (Malabe
Private Medical College) into a semi-government enterprise was discussed during
a meeting between the government and
Deans of medical faculties of state universities.
According to
Parliament sources, the Deans agreed with the proposal during the meeting with
Higher Education and Highways Minister Lakshman Kiriella at the Parliamentary
Complex yesterday. Prof. Mohan de Silva of the University Grants Commission and
Deans of Medical Faculties of seven state universities attended the meeting. It
is learnt that the government would consider converting the SAITM, a semi
government enterprise and the Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital into a
public-private partnership.
The agreement reached during
the meeting had been conveyed to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday,
the sources said.
