Sri Lankan Government has decided to construct 60 Hostels for university students. The proposal to construct 60 hostels for university students in the country has been approved by the Cabinet and is expected to be completed within the next 2 years.

There are 17 Universities, including 2 Buddhist Universities, currently functioning in the country with a student population of around 92,000.

The decision was taken at the Cabinet meeting held today (18), considering the need to provide hostel facilities to a large number of students of these Universities, a statement said.

Each of these buildings will consist of 4 stories, with 100 rooms and will provide hostel facilities to 200 students. Over 12,000 students are expected to be benefited upon completion of this project, it said.

The proposal was made by S.B. Dissanayake, Minister of Higher Education, while each hostel is estimated to cost Rs 220 million.
