UNIVOTEC Sri Lanka-25 Universities for Vocational Technology

Sri Lankan government has taken measures to set up 25 university colleges affiliated to the University of Vocational Technology (UNIVOTEC) to create alternate learning pathways up to the degree level for students who are leaving formal education.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development will set up 20 university colleges by upgrading the existing training centers falling under the purview of the Ministry. The government has allocated Rs. 1.6 billion in the 2013 Budget for the project.
Another 5 university colleges will be established in collaboration with the private sector.
The Cabinet approved the proposal made by Minister of Youth Affairs and Skills Development Dullas Alahapperuma to set up the university colleges.
The UNIVOTEC, established in 2009, provides a career path to obtain a degree for the students in the Technical Education and Vocational Training System, based on their aptitudes and abilities, to acquire University Education.

  1. A very good step taken towards granting the opportunity of obtaining a vocational degree. The program should plan to accommodate kids from farmer/fisherman families, who may have not gone up to higher classes at school, and accommodate them in the proposed training, via lower leve certificate, diploma, higher diploma and then degree.May be even going up to post graduate degrees at the UNIVOTECH.The said kids could easily be made to fit degree programes in Agro.Fisheries,Livestock and Food Technology to be offered by the UNIVOTECH.Under this activity the present technical colleges should be brought into play the bottom role offering pre-proposed affiliated college courses. The system should higher fitting and qualified staff in the fields of concern. I wish the program success.-Prof.Emeritus.Arthur Bamunuarchchi-(SJU-Sri Lanka)Indipendant consultant -Fd.Scientist/Technologist
