A Satyagraha (sitting-in protest) launched by
a group of students of Sri Lanka's Rajarata University continued for the 70th
day despite a court directive to discontinue the protest.
Secretary of the Inter University Students
Federation (IUSF) which is behind the protest has told local media the
allegation that the students have assaulted a youth in the village was a rumor
aimed to disrupt their protest and the campaign will continue until their
demands are met.
Mihinthale Police said a 20-year-old youth
from Ambathalawa in Mihinthale yesterday lodged a complaint that he was
assaulted by the protesting students. The youth has been admitted to the
Mihinthale Hospital after lodging the complaint with the police.
The students are protesting the banning of 27
students from attending lectures and demanding the authorities to reinstate the
suspended colleagues.
The Mihinthale Police had on Thursday (13)
dismantled a platform set up by the university students in front of the
university for the protest following a Court Order by the Anuradhapura
Additional Magistrate and arrested eight students.
The students were later released on bail by
the Anuradhapura Magistrate after warning them not to engage in the protest
that disrupts public peace.
However, the students will continue their
struggle until their demands are met, the student union representative has
said.Head of the Sri Lanka Bhikku university, Anuradhapura Venerable Professor
Thumbulle Seelakkanda Thero says that
the inter university students federation is behind the present student
agitation of the university. It has been
pointed out that several Bhikku students of the university are engaged in
efforts to destabilize administration of the university.
The Venerable Thero said that disciplinary
action has been taken against such students with the objective of bringing them
into the correct path. The studentship
one Bhikku student was suspended according to the decision of the university
board of administration. The residential facilities of nine other Bhikku
students were also suspended.
